Cannabidiol (also known as CBD) is a compound in cannabis that has significant medical benefits, but does not make people feel "high" or “stoned” - and can even counteract the psychoactivity of THC.
Because CBD-rich cannabis is non-psychoactive or less psychoactive than THC-dominant strains, it is appealing for patients looking for relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures, spasms, and other conditions (without feeling lazy or any uneasiness).
For children who qualify for medical cannabis, a CBD-only strain is usually what is prescribed by doctors for this same reason.
Scientific and clinical research (much of it sponsored by the American government) underscores CBD’s potential as a treatment for a wide range of conditions, including: arthritis, diabetes, alcoholism, MS, chronic pain, schizophrenia, PTSD, depression, antibiotic-resistant infections, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders. CBD has demonstrable neuroprotective and neurogenic effects, and its anti-cancer properties are currently being investigated at several academic research centers in Canada, the United States, and elsewhere.
Further evidence suggests that CBD is safe even at high doses.
CBD-rich cannabis has a long history of being used to treat health problems. Queen Victoria used CBD-rich cannabis for menstrual cramps in the 19th century. Studies had long suggested that CBD lessens anxiety and reduces the severity and frequency of seizures. But, up until a few years ago, CBD-rich strainswere generally not available to cannabis users in Canada and other areas. Generations of breeding marijuana for maximum THC and a strong “high” had reduced the CBD to trace amounts in most cannabis strains.
Almost everyone wants to know where to get CBD-rich products and how to use them for maximum benefit. After decades in which only high-THC cannabis was available in North America and beyond, CBD-rich strains and products are now available to medical and recreational users. Depending on which province you're in, you can order recreational CBD cannabis from your local or online retailers, and medically from any of the federally licensed producers.
