As the times shift and the stigma around smoking cannabis fades, people over 50 are now entering the wonderful world of cannabis at a quickened pace. So why is this happening now?
"Legalization has a lot do with it. Even though I never thought it actually made you one, I would have never wanted to be branded a criminal, even with something as petty as smoking marijuana." said Elizabeth, an Edmonton-based senior now using high CBD cannabis for pain.
"Vaporizers have a lot to do with it too. I never smoked a day in my life, so that wasn't an option for me."
New technology that offers safer alternatives to smoking, and in a more discreet way have certainly helped. Another theory is the lack of drug tests and plethora of extra time on their hands.
Pain might also have something to do with it.
An American study from 2016 showed that seniors using Medicare part D in states with legal medical cannabis actually received fewer prescriptions for other drugs to combat depression, anxiety, pain, and other issues. Seniors appear to prefer cannabis to the medications they might otherwise be taking. In other words: the average nana prefers kush over oxys.
Another positive note was from a separate study published last year from the American Medical Association. It revealed that opioid prescriptions for Medicare part D recipients dropped 14% after a state legalized medical cannabis.
Finally, the ever widening use of alternative delivery options for cannabis (like edibles, topicals, tinctures, and capsules) offer solutions to folks that simply don't want to smoke. For Canadians, options like edibles are completely legal - as long as you make them yourself. Because of this, machines to decarboxilate and/or infuse edibles and tinctures are becoming more popular as people look to create their own cannabis products discreetly at home.
In the meantime, we're glad to see folks in their golden years appreciate good cannabis in a safe way.
